In October, Indagro bvba completed the installation of the dimmable Monarch fixtures at phalaenopsis grower Butterfly Orchids. The Oreon LED Control Center, the operating system of the LED fixtures, is connected to the greenhouse climate computer Priva Connext.

Water-cooled LEDs are essential to any expansion

Koppert Cress has planned two expansions this year, which are both focused on technological innovation, CO2 neutrality, and energy savings. The choice of LED is a logical one. Koppert Cress was the first grower in the world who believed in LED lighting to conserve energy and thus gain more control over the development of the crop. Devised in partnership with Oreon, the water-cooled concept involved capturing heat from the LEDs and storing it in the ground. It’s a successful and sustainable concept that fits seamlessly into Koppert Cress’s vision. After six previous installations, Oreon’s water-cooled LED lights can now almost be called a starting point for future development phases of the company.

LED, light recipes, greenhouse horticulture and everything around it: Wiki-Wouter gives growers tailor-made advice

His heart is in scientific research, but above all he wants to provide growers with the very best advice. Wouter Staats calls himself the spider in the web at Oreon: he knows everything about LED, has an enormous knowledge of greenhouse horticulture and an unrelenting interest in the latest developments. "I'm a kind of Wikipedia that is constantly up to date," he laughs.Wouter studied applied biology at the HAS University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch. “I soon realized that I found the innovative side of greenhouse horticulture fascinating. The Netherlands is a frontrunner in this regard; all the latest developments take place here. I wanted to be part of that and learn more about this industry.”In 2016, after his studies, Wouter worked as a junior advisor at the HAS and started working with LED there for the first time. “It was already there, but it was still early days. A lot of research was already done; it was clear that LED had a big potential in the horticultural market. You could say that I saw the market really mature in those years and I believe the potential has even got bigger.”Because there is still plenty of room for innovation and improvement, that's clear. LED is now increasingly embraced in greenhouse horticulture and with the current gas and energy prices, the demand is increasing even further. It won't be long before LED is the norm in this industry.Flexible spectrumStaats has recently seen a trend emerging in glasshouse horticulture: growers choose what kind of crop they are going to grow on the basis of a light recipe. “They purchase a light recipe that allows them to achieve the best results in their own circumstances.” The development in light recipes is moving at lightning speed. At this moment, there are even experiments being done, with light recipes per part of the day or per hour, which will save extra energy. LED fixtures with a flexible spectrum where the grower has full control over the color and the amount of light is the future. “I am extremely proud to have been able to contribute to this innovation at Oreon and I can't wait to put this into practice, together with growers”.Wouter's heart is therefore with the research. He gains his knowledge by staying informed about developments in the market, Oreon’s competition and about science. He then translates this to the customers, in order to give them the best possible advice. "That's where I thrive best."

Dimmable and spectrum flexible LED fixtures offer growers maximum control over lighting installation

Dutch Powerhouse Monarch, the smallest and most powerful top light on the market, has been improved. The water-cooled LED fixture is now available with a 1200W driver and more efficient LED chips, and can reach a light output of up to 4020 µmol/s. In addition, the top lights are now dimmable via Oreon's LED Control Center in the cloud.

Butterfly Orchids gets triple energy savings by switching to water-cooled LED

Butterfly Orchids is switching from HPS to LED after the summer. Phalaenopsis grower Gerben van Giessen has chosen Oreon’s water-cooled LED fixtures for this, in particular because of the huge energy savings. In addition to high efficiency, the water cooling technology will also save on energy costs for cooling and heating his greenhouse. “The switch to LED was inevitable and the water cooling options suit our crop and cultivation strategy perfectly,” says Van Giessen.

Making a lettuce greenhouse more sustainable using water-cooled LED fixtures

In 1994, Peter and Christel Verschaeren of the Flemish company Hydroponic bvba started growing lettuce directly in the ground in almost 12,000 m2 (approx. 129,000 sq ft). Now they're growing their lettuce on a mobile gutter system under glass, HPS lamps have been installed, and the greenhouse has been automated further. Persistently high energy prices have led them to look for a new, more efficient lighting technology that allows them to install more lights using less energy.

How can you get a higher turnover with a lower energy bill?

Some crops, such as cannabis and roses, benefit from high light levels. Cannabis grows faster with a lot of light; roses develop more stems and need less time to grow into a saleable product. For various crops, a high light level is therefore important for production and turnover.

We wouldn't have made it without LED

De Kruidenaer has been growing basil in a hybrid setup with water-cooled LED lighting from Oreon since 2016 (and was one of the first in the Netherlands to do so). Grower Christ Monden was happy: more production due to a shorter growth cycle and better quality, more resilient basil plants. But customers demand a longer shelf life for packaged basil. He had to find a solution, and besides introducing new techniques such as nanobubble technology and biodegradable plugs, he also took a close look at the light spectrum of his LED fixtures.
