R&D Electronics Engineer - LED horticulture
About Oreon
Oreon is a Dutch innovative developer and manufacturer of high-tech LED grow lights. Oreon started nearly 15 years ago with extensive LED research. Throughout these years many tests have been implemented. The first commercial project with Oreon water-cooled LED fixtures was installed back in 2009. Now our LED fixtures are worldwide deployed in the horticulture and vertical/indoor farming industry above various types of crops.
Oreon stands for innovation, quality and flexibility. Our mission is to offer growers customized LED lighting solutions to further optimize their growing conditions and energy efficiency.
Your challenge & purpose
Reinforce R&D capacity by taking ownership of technical challenges in electronics, optics, and testing. The engineer is responsible for analysis, design, and validation, and contributes to reliable and efficient product development. The role covers both New Product Development and more exploratory work within New Technology Development, ensuring that innovations can be translated into robust, practical solutions. The position combines solid electrical engineering expertise with the ability to oversee system interactions and communicate effectively with suppliers and customers.
Key responsibilities
Analysis & Design
- Analyze and solve electrical and electronic challenges independently.
- Design and justify driver and LED configurations for new fixtures.
- Perform simulations and verifications of electrical, thermal and optical aspects.
Testing & Validation
- Develop and execute test plans for drivers, LED modules, and complete fixtures.
- Interpret measurement and test results, and translate findings into clear recommendations.
- Program and adapt production measurement and testing tools; automate test setups (Python/Matlab).
Networking & Systems Support
- Contribute to research and fine tuning of communication technologies such as Bluetooth Mesh.
- Support system-level optimization tasks, e.g. simulations for relay density and throughput in large greenhouses.
Suppliers & Customers
- Manage technical questions with suppliers and assess their solutions.
- Work with installers and customers to align specifications and certification requirements.
- Communicate findings and decisions clearly in both directions.
Process & Documentation
- Define and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and validation templates.
- Document design choices, test results, and lessons learned.
- Contribute to improvement of development processes.
Innovation & Mindset
- Brings practical ideas to improve product design and testing approaches.
- Uses sound technical understanding to propose improvements in performance, reliability, or cost.
- Comfortable suggesting alternative approaches when appropriate.
Result Areas
- Reliable analyses and validated designs directly usable for product development.
- Improved throughput in testing and development via automation and better tools.
- Clear documentation and standardized processes that reduce dependency on individuals.
- Effective communication and alignment with suppliers and customers on technical matters.
Profile
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or similar.
- 7–10 years of experience in product development teams (electronics, lighting, or related industry).
- Solid knowledge of power electronics and LED systems, with understanding of driver behavior and LED fundamentals.
- Experience with automated test development (Python/Matlab), data analysis, and reporting.
- Capable of contributing to system-level and networking tasks (e.g. mesh communication, provisioning, debugging).
- Proactive and independent, with structured problem-solving skills.
- Good overview of how electrical, optical, and software aspects interact in a product.
- Strong communication in English (written and spoken).
- Experience in the horticulture and or lighting sector is a plus.
